Ventura County has selected Esteban Rodriguez as director for Ventura County Animal Services. Rodriguez succeeds former director Jackie Rose, who retired from the agency in May.

Rodriguez brings 16 years of experience in animal welfare, having held various positions across municipal shelters, including in Santa Barbara.

His career includes leadership roles at several major shelters across the country, such as Dallas, San Antonio and Austin, Texas; Tucson, Arizona; and most recently, as the executive director of the Seattle Animal Shelter in Washington state.

Rodriguez’ work has included oversight of operations, field services, and community outreach, all focused on progressive, lifesaving practices.

“I am truly honored to join Ventura County Animal Services, working alongside an incredible team of staff and volunteers who are deeply committed to the well-being of our animals and community,” Rodriguez said.

“Together, with the support of county leadership, our dedicated stakeholders, and our community members, we will build meaningful connections that enrich the lives of every member of Ventura County — pets and people alike,” he said.

Rodriguez will assume his new duties on Oct. 14 at an annual salary of $215,000.
