For decades, Greyhound buses rolled in and out of the station at the corner of Carrillo and Chapala streets in Santa Barbara.

However, Greyhound pulled out 12 years ago, and since then, the gateway corner to downtown Santa Barbara has been a bit of a ghost town.

That’s all about to change.

The one-time bus stop soon will be a home for high-end electric vehicle chargers.

Electrify America, whose headquarters are in Virginia, is installing fast-charging vehicle stations. The location will include 20 DC Fast Chargers, along with new landscaping.

The stations will charge vehicles in 30 minutes.

“This new facility will provide quick and efficient charging in the downtown core, allowing customers to visit and shop downtown while they wait,” said Alelia Parenteau, Sustainability & Resilience director for the City of Santa Barbara. “The current central fast-charging locations have been very popular, so we expect this to be a well-used facility.”

Santa Barbara has 44 public fast chargers, but 28 of them are owned by Tesla. Only vehicles licensed to charge at a Tesla charger can use them, according to Parenteau.

She estimated there are 50 to 100 Level 2 charging stations, including private ones, in the city. Level 2 chargers deliver about 240 volts of power and can charge much faster than a Level 1 charger, which is typically a wall outlet.

“It’s a harder number to pin down because we don’t track installations on private parcels,” she said.

Parenteau said public electric vehicle stations can be found at 5 Points, the Ortega Garage downtown, DCFC Telsa (open to everyone), Bank of America on Upper State Street, behind Chase Bank near the Arlington Theatre, La Cumbre Plaza and the county building at Anapamu and Santa Barbara streets.

Electify America runs about 5,000 fast chargers in the country and about 1,100 regular stations in North America.

Crews are busy digging up the site and to install the infrastructure.
