A new five-story apartment complex will be coming to De la Guerra Street in Santa Barbara, complete with more than 40 housing units, a parking lot, and a self-storage building next door.
The city’s Architectural Board of Review granted final approval to the project on Tuesday in a 4-1 vote.
The development at 102 W. De la Guerra St. will include 44 new housing units and 77 parking spots. The storage facility will be four stories tall and include a basement.
The plans for the building were previously presented to the ABR in June and came back for review in October.
The project received support from most of the ABR members, who praised the developers for working with them since the plans were first submitted.
“I think this is a great project,” board member Will Sofrin said. “I think you guys have worked hard to accomplish … sort of the comments that the board has made, so I think the project’s ready for final approval.”
Board member Trey Anderson was the main opposition to the residential building, which he said did not match the city’s other architecture. Anderson said other buildings in the city attempt to create a distinct experience for people walking down the street and put beauty forward.

“Architecture serves a public function,” Anderson said, “and I don’t see this building serving or getting anywhere close to aspiring to that function.”
He brought up issues with the size of the rooms in the building. He also raised questions about privacy for some of the rooms, saying he was worried that they were too visible from the street.
He finished his comments by saying he could not support the project.
