Dos Pueblos girls basketball survived a double-overtime thriller with Rio Mesa for a 60-49 victory on Thursday at Sovine Gym in Goleta.

“The team made big plays in crucial moments, including free throws,” Charger head coach Andy Casanueva said.

Both sides got off to slow starts in what proved to be a dramatic affair, as Dos Pueblos held an 11-6 lead after the first and remained in front 21-16 heading into halftime.

The Chargers continued to boast a comfortable lead throughout the third and grew it to 34-26 with one quarter left in regulation.

The Spartans turned it up a notch in the fourth quarter, outscoring Dos Pueblos 17-9 in the final quarter to send the game into overtime.

After both sides managed just four points in a defensive struggle in the first overtime, the Chargers regained their footing in the second overtime. Dos Pueblos held Rio Mesa to just two points and poured in 13 of its own to pull away for the double-overtime win.

Carly Letendre was all over the court for the Chargers, collecting 19 points and 11 rebounds from her guard position. Asha Nayak also contributed on the offensive end with 16 points.

The Letendre-Nayak duo knocked down 11-of-12 free throws in double overtime to seal the victory.

Dos Pueblos is now 13-11 and 7-3 against Channel League foes.

San Marcos 52, Oxnard 24

The Royals rolled past the Yellow Jackets on Senior Night on Thursday inside the Thunderhut.

San Marcos celebrated its senior class of Amelyse Wong and Janelle Capuno in a pregame ceremony.

After the festivities, the Royals locked in on the defensive end against Oxnard. San Marcos held its visitors to 15 points in the first half and just nine points in the final two quarters to earn the lopsided win.

“Our defense was the key tonight,” San Marcos head coach Devin Uyesaka said. “We did a good job of making adjustments, girls are communicating better. Even when we had mistakes, the girls kept working.

“It was really good to see our girls push through and keep playing through. Our guards did a better job guarding the perimeter compared to our last game against Oxnard at their place. We also did a really good job controlling the boards.”

Lily Ruvalcaba led the charge for the Royals with 18 points, while Selena Valencia and Izzy Schow followed with nine and eight points, respectively.

“Our guards, Selena Valencia and Jada Ahmad, did a great job of being patient on offense and making good decisions in the halfcourt,” Uyesaka said.

“Our post players, Lily Ruvalcaba, Izzy Schow and Kaliah Alvin really did a great job with our post presence on both ends of the court, battling inside and not being afraid of being physical.”

San Marcos will roll out the welcome mats for Ventura on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

“Eden and Jaymi set the tone early, driving on offense and jumping passing lanes on defense,” Bishop Diego head coach Jeff Burich said. “Jaymi was all over the court, pressuring the ball and setting up the offense.

“This was Eden’s most complete game. She showed nice touch around the basket and made several key plays on the defensive end.”
