San Marcos girls basketball took complete control in the first quarter and never looked back en route to a 68-20 rivalry win over Santa Barbara High on Thursday inside J.R. Richards Gym.

The Royals had their way on both ends of the court in the first quarter, dropping 25 points while holding the Dons to just three points. Amelyse Wong led the early attack with 11 first-quarter points.

The San Marcos defense continued to dominate throughout the game, preventing Santa Barbara High from reaching double figures in every single quarter.

Meanwhile, the Royals continued to cruise on the offensive end to pull away for the lopsided victory.

San Marcos’ Jada Ahmad ended the night with a game-high 19 points, while Wong, Lily Ruvalcaba and Izzy Schow joined her in double figures with 13, 10 and 10 points, respectively.

The Royals are now 6-2 in Channel League play, trailing only undefeated Ventura. Meanwhile, the Dons dropped to 0-8 against league opponents.

Dos Pueblos 46, Oxnard 38

The Chargers scrapped their way to a big Channel League win over the Yellow Jackets on Thursday at Sovine Gym in Goleta.

With the win, Dos Pueblos (12-10, 6-2 Channel League) leapfrogged Oxnard in the league standings and are now tied for second place with San Marcos.

After battling to a slim 33-32 lead with one quarter to play, the Chargers dominated the fourth by outscoring the Yellow Jackets 13-6 in the quarter en route to the win.

Kindah Ahmad-Reda dominated the paint to the tune of 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Carly Letendre dropped 19 points and swiped seven steals.

Bishop Diego 61, Santa Clara 10

The Cardinals cruised to a Tri-Valley League win over Santa Clara on Thursday.

The duo of Jaymi Coronado and Alyssa Chrestenson spearheaded the offensive attack with 17 points apiece, while Eden Wynne ended the night with 12 points.

“I thought we moved the ball well against their zone and did a nice job finding the open person,” Bishop Diego head coach Jeff Burich said. “Our transition offense was great in the 1st half. Jaymi had several nice assists getting players easy shots.”

The Cardinals (17-2, 3-0 Tri-Valley League) will be on the road against Thacher on Saturday.

Laguna Blanca 30, Dunn 25

The Owls survived a late comeback effort to earn a league win over the Earwigs on Thursday.

Laguna Blanca controlled the pace in the first half and took an 11-point lead into halftime. Dunn battled back to cut the deficit to two points in the second half, but the Owls held on for the win.

Charlotte Carpenter paced the Owls with 11 points in the victory.

“It was a defensive battle all game long,” Laguna Blanca head coach Charlie Aslesen said. “Without the inside defensive presence of senior Vanessa Vasquez and the rest of the post play for the Owls, this game would have slipped away. Strong defense and rebounding won this game for us.”
