San Marcos girls water polo secured a third-place finish in the Newport Elite 8 Tournament on Saturday.

“I was very proud of our athletes this weekend,” San Marcos head coach Chuckie Roth said. “The girls worked so hard. It was great to see them have a successful outcome. This is the first time we’ve placed third in this tournament in a very long time.”

The Royals began their day with a 15-10 loss to Newport before bouncing back and taking down Oaks Christian by a score of 11-8 in the third-place matchup.

Shea Estabrook, Jade Pattison, Bethany King and Charlotte Raisin all scored twice in the loss to Newport.

Pattison and Raisin stayed hot in their second game of the day, leading the Royals with three goals apiece. In the cage, Bethany King held Oaks Christian to just one goal in the second and third quarter combined to help her team pull away.

“We battled against Newport through some adverse situations. They showed true resiliency,” Roth said. “In the Oaks Christian game, Bethany King was amazing in the goal. It was truly a team effort on offense.”

San Marcos will host the winner of Ventura High and Santa Barbara High in the second round of the Channel League Tournament on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
