It was business as usual in the Ralphs at 5170 Hollister Ave. near Goleta Tuesday morning. Customers strolled through the aisles as employees stocked the shelves with no sign that a deadly altercation took place in the store the day before.
The store reopened Tuesday morning after closing early on Monday after an assault and a fatal shooting involving law enforcement.
Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the store at 2:39 p.m. Monday to a report of a man “actively assaulting a victim with a weapon,” spokeswoman Raquel Zick said.
Deputies attempted to arrest the man, which led to an altercation and the assault suspect was shot by one or more deputies, Zick said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, inside the store, and deputies were uninjured in the incident, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

As of Tuesday, the Sheriff’s Office had not disclosed information about the assault, including what weapon was used or whether injuries were reported. The Coroner’s Bureau responded to the scene and has not released the decedent’s name as of Tuesday.
However, photos obtained by KEYT appear to show two men wearing bloody clothes, with one of them holding a knife and a dog on a leash. A fight reportedly started outside the store and moved inside, KEYT reported.
The Ralphs was closed for the rest of Monday and employees were sent home. Some store workers told Noozhawk that they had heard several gunshots during the incident.
The entire Magnolia Shopping Center in the Eastern Goleta Valley was briefly closed to the public after the incident. The California Highway Patrol reported that the shopping center reopened as of 3:30 p.m., however most of the parking lot remained blocked off.
The parking lot was fully reopened by Tuesday morning.
Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Raquel Zick said the department will release more information as soon as it’s available and doesn’t compromise the investigation.
