Isla Vista Recreation & Park District (IVRPD) and the UCSB AS Environmental Affairs Board (EAB) are getting ready to celebrate Isla Vista Earth Day, an annual free gathering that promotes use without waste and encourages time with good company.
IV Earth Day will take place 1 p.m. Saturday, April 26 at Anisq’Oyo Park.
The event will feature plant potting; a clothing swap; T-shirt tie-dyeing; student tables; an appearance by the Goleta Valley Library Bookvan; and a plywood mosaic that all attendees will have a hand in painting and assembling throughout the day.
Bands slated to perform at the festival are Junkyard, Fig Jam, Danny Vista, and Left on Read.
“Earth Day reminds us that protecting our planet is not just a one-day commitment; it’s a shared, lifelong responsibility,” said Santa Barbara County Board Chair Laura Capps. “By coming together in celebration, education and action, we strengthen our connection to the Earth and to one another.
“Thank you to IVRPD and the EAB for fostering this community spirit and putting environmental stewardship at the heart of everything they do.”
“The Environmental Affairs Board is super excited for our annual Earth Day event in Isla Vista,” said UCSB Environmental Affairs Board chairs. “Planning and throwing this event has been extremely fulfilling. We have been coordinating with different clubs and local orgs since fall quarter.
“We are ready to enjoy a day full of celebration, sustainability, live music, and lots of games and food for the local community.”
“Abundant parks, majestic nature, and lovely landscapes are the lifeblood of Isla Vista, and there is no better way to reaffirm their centrality than by bringing the whole community together for an afternoon on the grass,” said IVRPD General Manager Kimberly Kiefer. “The district looks forward to an afternoon that will match the vibrancy of our town’s ecology.”
The event is supported by partnerships between IVRPD, EAB, UCSB AS Recycling, and IVCRC.
IVRPD encourages guests to attend the event by bicycle, by skateboard, by foot or via bus. Direct bus routes to the park include Santa Barbara MTD Lines 11, 15x, 25x, and 27.
