Vivian Grenald and Kayla Rice combined for 29 points to power the JSerra girls basketball team to a 52-35 win over Camarillo for the Gold Division championship of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions on Saturday at J.R. Richards Gym.
Grenald scored 16 points and Rice had 13 to lead a balanced attack. The Lions’ defense also made a big impact as it held Camarillo to seven points in the first half and 16 after three quarters.
Camarillo was led by Liz Rocha with 16 points and Daniela Rocha with 15, all on three-pointers.
In semifinal action, JSerra routed Oaks Christian, 82-41, and Camarillo beat Orcutt Academy, 56-39.
Orcutt Academy defeated Oaks Christian, 57-50, in the third-place game and Thousand Oaks edged St. Joseph, 52-51, in the consolation final.
The Green Division was won by Arroyo Grande, 39-35, over Paramount. Westlake defeated Pacifica, 61-35, for the consolation title.
In earlier semifinal games, Paramount defeated San Luis Obispo, 51-41, and Arroyo Grande beat Mission Prep, 35-30.
Chloe Bronson of Arroyo Grande was the Green Division MVP.
Dos Pueblos
Senior guard Carly Letendre became the all-time leading scorer in Dos Pueblos girls basketball history as she tossed in 22 points in the Chargersā 59-30 division cross-over win over Mission Prep on the final day of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions.
Letendre now has 1,148 points in her four-year career. She passed previous co-leaders Camilla Casanueva and Justine Katz, who each scored 1,135 points. They both continued their careers in college. Casanueva played four years at Brandeis University, while Katz is currently a sophomore at Carnegie Mellon.
Dos Pueblos blew the game open in the third period, outscoring Mission Prep 14-2.
Kinda Ahmad-Reda had a solid game with 19 points and Asha Nayak scored 14.
The Chargers improve to 7-7.
In an earlier Gold Division consolation round game, DP fell to St. Joseph, 72-45. Nayak led the team with 12 points, Penelope Frazer had 11 and Ahmad-Reda added 10.
Letendre was named to the all-tournament team.
San Marcos
The Royals split its two consolation round games on Saturday. They defeated San Luis Obispo in a division crossover contest, 54-35, after suffering a 51-29 Gold Division loss against Thousand Oaks.
All-tournament selection Jada Ahmad scored 21 points and Autumn Johnson and Kaliah Alvin provided a spark on defense in the win over San Luis Obispo.
āAutumn did a great job applying pressure and getting deflections. Kaliah Alvin made some great hustle plays and getting boards for us,ā said coach Devin Uyesaka.
Lily Ruvalcaba added 10 points and Alvin contributed 8 points.
āWe did a better job seeing the floor and moving the ball,ā said Uyesaka of the offense.
Against Thousand Oaks, the Royals held the Lancers to six points in the first quarter and had a three-point lead at halftime.
The second half was all Thousand Oaks, which was coming off its first loss of the season on Friday.
Santa Barbara
The Dons dropped a 41-19 decision to Buena in the Green Division seventh-place game. Earlier, they fell to Westlake, 48-31.
Santa Barbara trailed 37-31 after three quarters but was held scoreless the fourth.
āWe ran out of gas a little bit at the end but overall we are showing great signs of improvement,ā said coach Andrew Butcher.
Shea Gannon recorded a double-double of 12 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Dons.
“Shea continues to improve at a rapid clip. Seventeen rebounds against a strong opponent in only her second year of organized basketball is impressive,ā said Butcher.
Gannon had a double-double of 10 points and 15 rebounds in the loss to Buena. Freshman Amelia Lopez played a solid game at point guard, said Butcher.
The Dons had a season-low 14 turnovers.
“We are starting to turn the ball over less and rebound more, which is a good sign. Amelia’s starting to get familiarized with the point position and I thought she was solid throughout the game today,ā said Butcher.
