A jury reached a verdict Monday morning and found a Santa Barbara woman guilty of attempted murder for stabbing her former classmate.
Cora Vides, 21, was found guilty of premeditation and attempting to murder her former Laguna Blanca classmate at Vides’ family home. Vides and the victim were 18-year-old women at the time of the Feb. 14, 2021 stabbing.
The jury also found all special allegations to be true, including that Vides used a deadly weapon, a knife, to cause great bodily injury.
Monday’s verdict came after a four-week trial and more than four days of deliberations.
Attorneys Kevin Weichbrod with the prosecution and Robert Sanger with the defense delivered their closing arguments to the jury on Aug. 1.
Vides was accused of stabbing her former classmate around 2 a.m. at Vides’ family home on the 600 block of Roberto Avenue in Santa Barbara’s Mesa neighborhood.
The stabbing occurred inside Vides’ bedroom. Vides stabbed the victim in her neck after getting the victim to lie down and close her eyes, with the pretense that Vides was showing her a meditation technique, according to trial testimony.
After the verdict was read, Vides was booked into the county’s Southern Branch Jail without bail. She had previously been free on $1 million bail.
Vides has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
Because the Superior Court jury found Vides guilty, the trial will now move into a sanity phase which will begin Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in Judge Von Deroian’s courtroom.
Depending on whether she is found not guilty by reason of insanity, she could be committed to a state psychiatric hospital or sentenced to state prison.
