GLENDORA, Calif. — The Santa Barbara City College Women’s Soccer team beat Citrus 2-1 on the road after Leilani Sanchez scored twice Friday afternoon.
“I’m proud of this group,” Head Coach Alex Zermeno said. “We’re low on numbers right now due to injury and illness, but we find ways to continue to compete and win.”
Sanchez opened the scoring in the 37th minute with an assist from Alia Collins. She scored again in the 52nd minute after Collins won the ball back in a dangerous area, giving the Vaqueros a 2-0 lead.
Giselle Loza scored for the Owls in the 59th minute, cutting SBCC’s lead to 2-1. The Vaqueros held off the Owls for the remainder of the match.
SBCC outshot Citrus 15-8 and held a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. Citrus’ goalkeeper made seven saves, including six in the second half, while SBCC goalkeeper Samantha Maytanes recorded three.
Now 4-2, the Vaqueros face Saddleback on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. at La Playa Stadium.
