Local runners Shayne Mihalka, Chelsea Frei, Kelsey Roberts and Karlyn Roberts made the journey across the globe to compete in the prestigious Tokyo Marathon on Sunday, March 1.

The tandem has trained together through Santa Barbara Running & Racing under coaches Rusty Snow and Mike Swan. They also serve as board members for the Santa Barbara Running Association.

The Tokyo Marathon is one of six races in the Abbott World Marathon Majors series, a collection of marathons that includes Boston, Chicago, New York, Berlin, Tokyo and London. Runners who complete all six earn the coveted Six Star Medal.

Mihalka completed his quest for the Six Star Medal by crossing the finish line of the Tokyo Marathon. It took him less than two years to run all six marathons.

Meanwhile, Kelsey and Karlyn Roberts each secured their fifth stars and Frei earned her third.

The Roberts sisters and Frei will continue their journey for the Six Star Medal in the coming years.
