In light of concerns by some Lompoc Unified School District (LUSD) students over expected changes in federal immigration policies and practices, the district is working to reassure families that all LUSD schools are safe and secure learning environments for every student.
During a regular board meeting on Nov. 12, the LUSD Board of Trustees adopted a Resolution in Support of Students in the Lompoc Unified School District, declaring a commitment to continue to welcome and support children from all backgrounds, including those from undocumented families.
The resolution reads in part: “Federal law guarantees all children the right to a free K-12 public education, including children who were brought to the United States without legal status. The recent election was experienced as polarizing for many students as well as adults. As teachers can attest, students who identify as LGBTQ, female, or as a person of color may view the recent election through a very different lens than others whose point of view differs and whose perspective should be equally respected.”

“Last year, we engaged in an inclusive district-wide process to refresh our vision and mission,” said Brian Jaramillo, assistant superintendent of Education Services. “Our vision is for each student to graduate from high school prepared to meet the challenges of post-secondary education and the demands of a successful career.
“The use of each is a key aspect of our vision that speaks to our commitment to each and every student no matter their socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, gender, religion, family structure, immigration status, or any other personal characteristic. We want to reassure all of our families of our commitment to a safe and secure learning environment.”
In preparation for the anticipated changes, LUSD is following the California Attorney General’s guidance highlighting schools’ responsibility for protecting the rights and safety of all students in California. In an effort to ensure educational rights, the district shared this guidance with families and staff members along with family resources to support their children.
