An unidentified man died after he fell about 50 feet from an Isla Vista bluff, authorities said on Saturday.
The man allegedly climbed over a “barrier fence” behind 6625 Del Playa Drive, County Fire Capt. Scott Safechuck said.
Firefighters from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department responded around 2:35 p.m. and carried the man up nearby stairs. He was then taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital by American Medical Response ambulance, according to County Fire.
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office said about 11:34 p.m. that the man did not survive.
The fall is the latest of several in Isla Vista the past few years.
Second District Santa Barbara County Supervisor Laura Capps put out a quick response.
“We are begging property owners to do the right thing and make your balconies safer by raising fence heights and other common-sense precautions,” Capps said in a statement to Noozhawk. “Our office is providing financial incentives to raise fencing. Lives are on the line.
Capps later in the evening said on social media: “We lost another life to the bluffs in Isla Vista yesterday. My heart breaks for this man and his family and friends.
“This tragedy is a stark reminder of how dangerous these bluff top properties are. Property owners: this is an urgent plea to do what’s right to help save lives. We all need to step up and make Isla Vista safer now.”
