A man was killed Thursday afternoon when he was struck by a vehicle on Highway 101 while he was getting into a parked vehicle on the shoulder west of Goleta, according to authorities.

The California Highway Patrol responded to a report of a vehicle hitting a pedestrian at 12:34 p.m. at Las Varas Canyon on the Gaviota Coast.

The victim was getting into a vehicle on the southbound shoulder and was “side-swiped” by a passing vehicle, said Capt. Scott Safechuck of the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

Several vehicles stopped to assist, and bystanders performed CPR, but the man succumbed to his injuries at the scene, Safechuck said.

He said the bystanders included a cardiologist and two electrical linemen who had an AED, and they “performed valiant lifesaving efforts” on the man.

CHP personnel were investigating the collision, and had the right-hand lane closed in the area as of 1:30 p.m. The lane was reopened around 4 p.m.

No further details were available.
