The search for a man who fell overboard from a boat near Point Conception ended tragically Sunday afternoon when his lifeless body was located, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

Emergency personnel were dispatched shortly before 3 p.m. to the area between Jalama Beach County Park and Point Conception, said fire Capt. Daniel Bertucelli.

A 67-year-old man had fallen off a 27-foot catamaran that had run aground near Point Conception, Bertucelli said.

The search for the man involved county water-rescue teams and a helicopter, along with personnel from Vandenberg Air Force Base and a helicopter from the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard located the man, Bertucelli said, but he was declared dead.

The man’s companion was rescued from the vessel and transported to shore for medical treatment, Bertucelli said.

The names of those on the boat were not released.
