One pedestrian died and a second was critically injured Tuesday after being struck by a vehicle in Santa Maria.

At approximately 5 a.m., officers from the Santa Maria Police Department responded to the collision on the 700 block of West Main Street, according to Lt. Daniel Rios.

Officers determined that an eastbound vehicle hit two men, ages 22 and 23, while they walked across Main Street mid-block, outside of a crosswalk.

Both suffered major injuries and were transported by AMR ambulance to Marian Regional Medical Center.

The 23-year-old succumbed to his injuries, Rios said, while the 22-year-old remained in critical condition.

Their identities were being withheld pending notification of relatives.

Personnel from the SMPD Traffic Unit and Crime Lab responded to the scene, with the Traffic Unit leading the investigation.

Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash, police said.

The woman driver, whose name was not released, remained at the scene and was cooperating with investigators, Rios added.

Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact Officer Robles with the Traffic Unit at 805.928.3781, ext. 2315.
