One person was killed Wednesday afternoon when a truck went off the road and landed in a ditch west of Lompoc, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.
Just before 12:30 p.m., personnel from the Lompoc and Santa Barbara County fire departments were dispatched to the crash on the 3200 block of West Ocean Avenue, county Fire Capt. Scott Safechuck said.
Emergency crews arrived at the scene west of Douglass Avenue to discover a 2018 Chevrolet pickup off the road and in a dry concrete irrigation canal along the roadway, California Highway Patrol Officer Arshdeep Dhanda said.
The westbound truck went off road’s north edge and overturned, Dhanda said.
Firefighters found a patient had been ejected from the vehicle, Safechuck said.
Despite lifesaving attempts by Lompoc firefighters and American Medical Response ambulance personnel, the patient was pronounced dead at the scene, Safechuck said.
Authorities will release the name of the person killed after family members have been notified of the death.
California Highway patrol officers from the Buellton area office were investigating the crash.
“This is a tragic day for the family and the community,” said Lt. Jason Bronson, commander of the CHP’s Buellton Area Office. “Our officers were at the crash scene with many of those family members, and I hope our investigation can provide some closure.”
Anyone with additional information about this incident can call the Buellton Area CHP office at 805.691.6160.
West Ocean Avenue, also Highway 246, leads to several farm fields, ranches and Surf Beach, which is home to the Amtrak passenger rail station.
The road also is used to access the southern portion Vandenberg Space Force Base, or to enter the main part of the base using the 13th Street gate, also known as the Solvang entrance.
