A pedestrian died after a traffic collision near Alisos Canyon just outside of Los Alamos early Saturday morning, according to California Highway Patrol officials.
Emergency personnel first responded to a report of a traffic collision involving a pedestrian at around 2:02 a.m. on the northbound Highway 101.
A 37-year-old Alabama man was found deceased at the scene. His name was not released.
The pedestrian was reportedly in the northbound lanes of the highway “when he was struck by a vehicle,” Highway Patrol officials said in a statement.
The incident was under investigation.
“The California Highway Patrol extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time,” Commander Joe Rodriguez said. “The CHP also recognizes the impact such incidents have on all parties involved.”
Pedestrians are legally allowed to walk on the right shoulder of Highway 101 in that area, but they aren’t allowed in the lanes, according to Highway Patrol officials.
“This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with being a pedestrian on a freeway at night,” Highway Patrol officials said.
Anyone who witnessed the incident should contact the California Highway Patrol Santa Maria area office and Officer Alvarez at (805) 608-6310.
