Wellness means something different to everyone, yet it remains a shared pursuit. It spans the physical, emotional, and mental dimensions of our lives, shaping how we show up in the world.
In a time where life feels increasingly demanding and digital noise surrounds us, nurturing wellness is more essential than ever. Embracing well-being allows us to build resilience, find balance, and live with intention.
Noozhawk’s annual Wellness Guide recognizes this multifaceted journey and offers a space to explore it more deeply. This year’s edition is designed to empower our readers with guidance, inspiration, and actionable tips to enrich their personal wellness practices.
By spotlighting local wellness leaders and businesses, we aim to connect our community with the tools and support they need to thrive. Through candid conversations and shared expertise, we hope to ignite new habits and help our readers prioritize their health from the inside out.
In this interview, Noozhawk spoke to Marc Grandle, Doctor of Chiropractic at Alki Art & Wellness Institute to learn more about the meaningful work they’re doing in the Santa Barbara community.
Alki Art & Wellness Institute
Question: What motivated you to start this health and wellness business, and what inspired the specific services or products you offer?

Answer: I founded Alki Art & Wellness Institute in 2001 to offer my community a more natural path to healing. After years of chronic back injuries from football, rugby, and construction work, I experienced firsthand the power of chiropractic care.
That transformation inspired me to help others restore their health and reach their full potential through the same integrative, natural approach.
Q: Can you provide an overview of the unique value proposition of your business and how it distinguishes itself in the crowded wellness market?
A: Hands-on chiropractic care has been the foundation of our practice for 24 years. Incorporating advanced modalities like Oxygen Therapy and Cold Laser has significantly enhanced the outcomes we are able to achieve for our patients.
We tailor a wellness plan that matches each patient’s unique needs. We are proud to be one of the few providers of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and Cold Laser Light Therapy in Santa Barbara. Our office also offers low-dose, reduced-radiation X-rays, providing some of the safest and fastest imaging available in town.
The goal is to target the source of your pain and deliver the most effective treatments that can provide relief. Our wellness and lifestyle coaching, combined with a supportive environment, empower you to live your healthiest, most vibrant life.
Q: How do you ensure that your services or products align with current health trends and consumer needs?
A: Staying ahead of health trends means listening closely to both the science and to my patients. We are continually studying and engaged in emerging research and adapting our services to reflect what’s shown to be most effective in clinical trials and what has been shown to get results in our office.
We provide in demand services with personalized wellness plans. At the core, our business is about delivering measurable results while anticipating what patients will need next—not just treating conditions, but optimizing long-term health.
Q: What strategies do you employ to maintain a high standard of quality and consistency across your offerings?
A: Every patient journey begins with a one-on-one consultation to create a strategic, personalized care plan. We focus on three core modalities—Chiropractic, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, and Cold Laser—each complementing the other and can be layered for maximum impact.
We keep things simple with clear, transparent pricing and reliable availability six days a week, making it easy for patients to stay consistent with their wellness goals. To maintain a high standard of care, we follow evidence-based protocols and invest in ongoing training.
At the same time, we’ve learned it’s essential to balance consistency with flexibility. While we uphold strong clinical standards across all treatments, we recognize that each person’s healing process is unique—and our approach adapts to meet those individual needs.
Q: How do you approach customer feedback and incorporate it into improving your business?
A: Patient feedback is one of our most valuable tools for growth. We actively invite it through conversations, follow-ups, and reviews—listening closely to what’s working and where we can improve. We treat every piece of feedback as an opportunity to elevate the patient experience and deliver better results.
Q: What measures do you take to ensure the safety and efficacy of your products or services, particularly in areas such as ingredient sourcing or service delivery?
A: Safety is at the foundation of everything we do. Chiropractic patients receive a comprehensive exam before any adjustments are made. During the first visit, each new patient spends a full hour one-on-one with me to ensure every aspect of their health is considered.
There is never a charge for any complimentary time spent on wellness coaching, education, or exercise instruction, because informed care is safe care. We offer welcoming treatment rooms as cleanliness and personal privacy are integral to our environment.
Q: How do you stay informed about regulatory changes and industry standards relevant to your business?
A: Staying informed is essential to delivering safe, compliant care. I regularly review updates from state and national chiropractic boards, radiologic continuing education, attend professional seminars, and maintain memberships with industry associations.
In addition, we’re regularly engaged in studying clinical trials and medical journals to ensure our treatments align with the latest research and best practices. This commitment helps us maintain the highest standards while continually evolving to meet patient needs.
Q: What role do partnerships or collaborations play in your business strategy, and how do you select potential partners that align with your brand values?
A: Partnerships are a key part of our strategy because true wellness often requires a collaborative approach. We align with professionals and organizations that share our core values. Whether it’s working with surgeons, physical therapists, holistic practitioners, or equipment suppliers, we look for partners who are committed to evidence-based practices and outstanding customer service.
Every collaboration must enhance the quality of care we provide and support our mission to help patients live more empowered lives. We also love partnering with local businesses in town to offer employee incentive programs and freebies.
We extend reduced cost services to to certain groups: Teachers, Fitness Professionals, Students, Hospitality Workers, Military and First Responders.
Q: How do you prioritize sustainability and environmental responsibility in your business operations and product offerings?
A: We believe that caring for people also means caring for the planet- when people are well, the planet is well.
We prioritize sustainability by minimizing single-use materials, choosing eco-friendly products when possible, and maintaining energy-efficient equipment.
We are proud to be a Fragrance-Free office. We also use digital records and low-dose X-ray technology which reduces waste and radiation exposure.
Q: Finally, what do you believe sets your health and wellness business apart from competitors, and how do you maintain a competitive edge in the market?
A: What sets us apart is our personalized, results-driven approach. We combine hands-on chiropractic care with advanced therapies like Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and Cold Laser to help patients heal naturally and effectively.
Every treatment plan is tailored, every patient is heard, and we’re always evolving to stay ahead of health trends. Our focus is simple: real care, real results, and a commitment to helping people live their healthiest lives.
