A small airplane crashed and sparked two vegetation fires near Old Town Orcutt on Saturday afternoon.

Shortly after 5:20 p.m., Santa Barbara County firefighters, along with counterparts from the Santa Maria Fire Department, responded to the incident in a field between Rice Ranch Road and Highway 1.

Firefighters pinpointed the location near Marcum and Clark avenues.

The pilot reportedly self-extricated from the bright red biplane, which came to rest upside down, and was not injured, county fire Capt. Scott Safechuck said.

The fire sent up a huge column of smoke that attracted the attention of residents and drivers.

No homes were threatened by the fire, Safechuck said.

Firefighters directed streams of water at the blaze in a field filled tall grass and other vegetation.

By 6 p.m., the smoke column had turned into a few wisps as firefighters succeeded at extinguishing the flames.

Firefighters stopped the forward progress of the blaze at 2.5 acres, Safechuck said, adding crews would remain at the scene to deal with any remaining hot spots.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation.

Additional information wasn’t immediately available.
