A celebration of the Navy’s presence at Point Mugu is set to continue Sunday, although attendees may want to prepare for large crowds.

The Point Mugu Air Show that began Saturday features the rare appearance of both the U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels, along with the U.S. Air Force Demonstration Squadron, the Thunderbirds.

On Saturday, would-be spectators reported lengthy traffic jams in the area of the air show as thousands of visitors flocked to the event. There were multiple reports of people waiting two hours in bumper-to-bumper traffic but not getting into the base.

One reason for heavy attendance Saturday might be forecasts calling for a 40% chance of light rain after 11 a.m. Sunday. Less than one-tenth of an inch is expected from Sunday’s system, according to the National Weather Service.

It’s not clear how Sunday’s weather might affect aerial performances, but low clouds and high winds can require revised flight plans.

Gates at Naval Base Ventura County, Point Mugu open at 8 a.m. Sunday.

The opening ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., with aerial performances launching at noon.

In addition to the co-headliners, the air show will include performances by other military plus civilian performers. A number of aircraft also will be on static display.

Naval officials said the Point Mugu Air Show will be the third time American’s premiere demonstration squadrons have performed at the same air show, and the first time at Point Mugu.

Large bags, backpacks bigger than 8 inches by 11 inches, ice chests and coolers will not be permitted.

Other prohibited items include drones, all weapons, all marijuana, any pets (excluding service animals), glass containers, bikes, scooters, skateboards, roller skates and roller blades.

Military and civilian personnel are required to have identification (state, federal or passport) while on base. Random identification checks will be conducted, officials said.

Naval officials said air show attendees from Santa Barbara County going southbound on Highway 101 should take the Rice Road exit and travel south to Pacific Coast Highway. The Point Mugu Naval Air Station is at 311 Main Road, Point Mugu.
