Police officers arrested a Los Angeles County man Thursday night after investigating a stabbing at the Santa Barbara Landing.

The suspect, identified by police as 49-year-old Ivan Hernandez, of Commerce, was booked on suspicion of charges related to assault with a deadly weapon.

Emergency personnel first responded to the harbor area at around 5:30 a.m. for a report of an assault, according to Santa Barbara Police Sgt. Nathan Beltran.

They found an adult male “suffering from multiple injuries,” Beltran said.

That man was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and was in stable condition as of Thursday night, according to Beltran.

“Officers conducted an extensive investigation throughout the day and determined the victim had become involved in a verbal altercation with multiple subjects in the harbor area,” Beltran said. “The verbal dispute escalated into a physical confrontation, which ultimately resulted in the victim being stabbed.”

Police officers returned to the area at around 6 p.m. to look for additional witnesses. At that time, they found someone disembarking from a local fishing boat who matched the suspect’s description and arrested him.

“Based on the investigation, this incident appears to be isolated, and there is no ongoing threat to the public,” Beltran said.

Hernandez was booked into the Santa Barbara County Main Jail Thursday night and was released on a bail bond, according to Sheriff’s Office records.
