The Santa Barbara Police Department arrested a 20-year-old man on Saturday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon in relation to a downtown fight and shooting reported last week

Police responded to 300 block of West Figueroa Street around 3 p.m. on Thursday to reports of gunshots. They discovered that multiple people fled on foot after a fight near Bath and Figueroa streets.

Witnesses said a shot was fired into the air, per radio traffic, and no injuries were reported.

Two juvenile subjects involved in the incident were taken into custody at the Anapamu Street Bridge shortly after, and booked into the Santa Maria Juvenile Hall, according to police.

Police later identified a third person allegedly involved, 20-year-old Jose Manual Suastegui of Santa Barbara, and issued a warrant for his arrest.

He was taken into custody on Saturday and booked into jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and being a felon in possession of a firearm, police said.

Officers also recovered a firearm allegedly involved in the shooting.

Suastegui’s bail was set at $250,000 and he remained in custody as of Monday.

He was on probation at the time of his arrest, according to Superior Court records. He pleaded guilty in February 2025 to assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury in a 2024 case.
