The Santa Barbara Police Department Thursday night arrested a 22-year-old Santa Barbara resident on suspicion of felony evading and hit-and-run.
The man, identified by police as Yahir Limon Avita, was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on a $75,000 bail.
He remained in custody as of Friday morning.
A police officer observed a black Lincoln Navigator traveling at a high rate of speed with its headlights not illuminated on the 1200 block of East Cota Street on Santa Barbara’s Eastside at around 9:30 p.m., according to Sgt. Bryan Kerr.
The driver of the vehicle allegedly “continued to travel recklessly through several residential streets in the Eastside neighborhood” and did not yield to an attempted traffic stop by the officer, Kerr said.
Police said the vehicle crashed into an unoccupied vehicle parked near 1100 E. Gutierrez St. and continued traveling down Gutierrez Street before then crashing into a tree on the 300 block of Calle Cesar Chavez Street.
“Following the collision, the occupants of the vehicle fled the area on foot,” Kerr said.
The driver returned to the scene “a short time later” and voluntarily surrendered to police, he said.
