Santa Maria police on Monday arrested a man and seized multiple firearms, ammunition and body armor following a reported assault with a firearm the previous night, the department said.
Officers responded at about 7:19 p.m. Sunday to the 400 block of West McElhaney and identified Joel Blanchard, 48, of Santa Maria as the suspect, but he fled the scene before officers arrived, police said.
At about 5:30 p.m. Monday, officers located Blanchard driving in the area of Williams Street and Elm Avenue, conducted a traffic stop, and took him into custody, police said.
A search of Blanchard’s vehicle revealed multiple firearms, including an AR-15-style rifle and high-capacity magazines, police said. A subsequent search of his residence turned up additional firearms, ammunition, high-capacity magazines and body armor.
Blanchard was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on suspicion of multiple weapons-related charges.
Bail was set at $50,000, according to jail records.
