Santa Maria police arrested a man Saturday and discovered “a stockpile of weapons and a large quantity of ammunition” while investigating other crimes.
At approximately 3:20 a.m., officers were investigating a reported robbery on the 1000 block of North Broadway when they heard several gunshots northeast of their location, Lt. Todd Logan said.
Officers and nearby residents reported hearing between five and eight shots.
Police responded to the area and located a man who matched the description of a suspect from a recent assault, Logan said.
“The suspect was found wearing body armor and armed with two loaded handguns,” he added.
Officers detained Emmanuel Munguia Zaragoza, 22, of Santa Maria.
Detectives obtained a search warrant for Zaragoza’s residence, where they discovered “a stockpile of weapons and a large quantity of ammunition,” Logan said.
All of the weapons and ammunition were seized as evidence.
Zaragoza was booked into the Santa Barbara Northern Branch Jail in Santa Maria on suspicion of multiple weapons crimes.
He remained in custody Sunday morning with bail set at $85,000.
