Bishop Diego baseball earned its first win of the season with an 18-1 rout of Del Sol on Wednesday at Oxnard College.

The Cardinals opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first, and Del Sol answered with a run of its own in the bottom half. However, the rest of the game was all Bishop Diego.

JJ Mercier tossed four strong frames to earn the win for the Cardinals, allowing one unearned run while striking out six. Meanwhile, David Timewell threw a scoreless fifth and Brandon Stein closed it out with two shutout innings of work.

At the plate, Sean Monaghan, Joe DeRosa and George Guzman each had three hits, while Monaghan drove in a pair of runs and DeRosa scored three times. Joaquin Adam, Mateo Zuniga and Rickey Fisher all had two hits.

Bishop Diego (1-3) will be on the road against Pioneer Valley on Friday.

Carpinteria High 4, Fillmore 1

The Warriors defended their home field with a Citrus Coast League win over Fillmore on Wednesday.

Carpinteria got on the board in the first inning on an RBI double by Dallas Bartholic, and the 1-0 lead held until the fifth inning.

Fillmore tied the game up with a run in the top of the fifth, but the Warriors answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, including an RBI double by Brick Trumble to regain the lead for good.

Bartholic handled the bulk of the pitching duties for the Warriors, allowing one run on one hit in five innings. Gabe Martinez took over and struck out four in the final two innings.

Offensively, Jonah Hernandez tallied a pair of hits in a game where every Warrior reached base at least once. Martinez and Gabe Chung also drive in runs for Carpinteria.

“It takes a lot of good play to beat a good team like Fillmore,” Carpinteria High head coach Pat Cooney said. “They force you to be good on the mound, at the plate and in the field.

“Dallas and catcher Micah Smith did a good job navigating a potent Flash offense, and the defense played catch behind them.  The heat is exhausting, so it was great to know that we had Martinez in relief when we needed him.”

The Warriors (8-0, 3-0 CCL) will take on Fillmore again on the road on Friday.
