San Marcos’ No. 1 singles player Jed Greenwald swept his three sets against Dos Pueblos Thursday, leading the Royals to a 13-5 Channel League win over the Chargers.
It was the first loss for Dos Pueblos (5-1).
The San Marcos No. 1 doubles team of Joey and Charlie Friedman continued their winning streak, also sweeping three sets, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
Dos Pueblos’ Connor McPherson, at No. 3 singles, won two sets, including a 7-6 tiebreaker over the Royals’ Matthew Chung, who otherwise won two sets.
Shea Suzuki and Kyle Shaffer pulled off two close wins for San Marcos with impressive cross court rallies and aggressive poaching.
The team of Kevin He/Luca DeAngelis went 2-1 in doubles for Dos Pueblos.
“This was a great match where so many of the sets had back and forth leaders,” said DP coach Laura Marsh. “It was fun to see how the boys competed against each other since this is always a dual we look forward to.
“I was impressed with many of the comebacks and know we have some things to work on in order to play better in our next meeting with the Royals in April.
Santa Barbara 14, Rio Mesa 4
The Dons performed so well Thursday, their coach feels they’re ready for another ‘stage.’
“Our team brought so much energy that the Santa Barbara Bowl booked us for Saturday night,” coach Garrett Patton quipped.
Senior Benjamin Tharakan and junior Levin Smith dominated in doubles.
“Benji was serving up spicy shots with Levin putting away the dishes at the net,” Patton said.
Bishop Diego 9, Hueneme 9
Short-handed Bishop Diego and Hueneme battled to a 9-9 tie in sets in Oxnard Thursday — and the number of total games won, the usual tiebreaker, was also a tie, at 67-all.
“With it being a non-league match, we did not play the third tiebreak option of everybody going back on court and playing tie breakers,” Cardinals coach Pete Kirkwood said.
“It was a courageous effort by the Cardinals,” Kirkwood said. “We could not field a full team today, and forfeited three sets and No. 3 singles. That also put us down 18-0 in games won.”
Bishop Diego’s No. 1 singles player Aaron Bush and the No. 1 doubles team of Max Schwartz and Agustin Gaona swept all 6 sets at the top spots.
“Aaron played very patiently and was moving well,” Kirkwood said. “He dominated his opponents 6-2,6-0,6-0. Aaron is 8-1 on the year and his confidence is growing every match.”
In doubles, “Max and Agustin were clutch. They pulled out a tiebreaker 7-3 in round 1 to take the set 7-6. They went on to beat the No. 2 and 3 teams 6-0.
“We have talked about the importance of every point when playing tiebreakers at practice,” Kirkwood said. “We play a lot of tiebreakers at practice. To have them come through with the confidence they exhibited was very satisfying.”
“This was a total team effort today!”
The Royals, 0-2-1, play St. Bonaventure Tuesday in their Tri-Valley League opener.
