San Marcos singles players Jed Greenwald and Carter Cotich each swept their three sets without the loss of a single game in leading the Royals to a 15-3 Channel League match against Santa Barbara Thursday.
The doubles teams of Charlie Friedman and Spencer Bauer and Shea Suzuki and Kyle Shaffer also swept their three sets for the Royals.
Suzuki and Shaffer won 6-0, 6-2, 6-1.
“Utilizing active poaching and consistent ground strokes, they were able to come up with a 6-0 win,” San Marcos coach Emily Carver said of the pair.
Nordhoff 12, Carpinteria 6
The Carpinteria boys took on CIF-SS Division 3 power Nordhoff Thursday in a Citrus Coast League match, and came away with a 12-6 loss.
The Warriors’ No. 1 singles player Max Stone was a bright spot, sweeping his three sets without the loss of a single game.
“Nordhoff’s top player changed up his strategy against Max this time as he continually tried to get to the net, but Max responded well, mixing in passing shots and lobs,” Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant said.
Warrior singles player Ryan Souza went 1-2 on the day, and the doubles team of Lucas Martin and Connor Gralewski won the other two Carpinteria sets.
Nordhoff was a finalist in the CIF finals last year, and the team didn’t graduate anyone from that squad, “so we knew we were up against a tough side,” Byrant said.
“We played fine today, but I know there is more upside to this team,” the coach said. “I just have to find out how to get it out of them. We can compete, but our issue lately has been consistency. If we can iron that out, we will be fine the rest of the way.”
Carpinteria is now 5-5 overall and 3-2 in the CCL. The Warriors play three matches next week, including rare back-to-back contests against Channel Islands, “with major playoff implications on the line,” Bryant said.
