Born on July 5, 1986, in Santa Maria and raised in Guadalupe, California, J.R. was a beloved son, father, brother, uncle, cousin and friend whose presence brought light and warmth to all who knew him.

J.R. attended Mary Buren Elementary School, McKenzie Junior High School and Righetti High School. From a young age, he demonstrated a strong work ethic and a deep love for his family — values that would guide him throughout his life.

J.R. was a loving and caring soul whose presence touched everyone around him. He had a gift for cooking and was a hard-working construction mason for more than 15 years.

Family was at the center of his life — especially his beloved Mom and, above all, his daughter, Avyanna, who was truly his world.

J.R. found a renewed passion in his walk with his Lord and Savior. He began taking Avy to church, desiring to share with her the love of Jesus and the foundation of faith.

A proud Los Angeles Rams and Dodgers fan, J.R. enjoyed gathering with family for barbecues, holidays and birthday celebrations.

He had a special bond with his two nieces, Ella and Zoila, and nephew Toby, as well as all of the younger kids in the family. He had a youthful spirit and was always right there with the kids in whatever they were doing. He was never too grown-up to laugh and play alongside the kids.

J.R.’s warmth, devotion and love will be remembered forever in the hearts of all who knew him.

He is survived by his father, Raymond Abernethy Jr., mother Patricia Estrada, daughter Avyanna (7 years old), sister Alicia Zuniga (Abernethy) and brother-in-law Mike Zuniga, nieces Ella Rae and Zoila, nephew Toby Jay, multiple aunts and uncles, cousins and second cousins.

J.R. was preceded in death by his grandparents Betty Jo and Raymond Abernethy Sr., aunt Serena Frazier, grandmother Aurora Casillas Mendez and grandfather Baldomero Estrada.

May his memory bring comfort to all who carry him in their hearts. A Celebration of Life will be held at noon August 29, 2025, at Calvary Chapel Santa Maria, 2620 Santa Maria Way.

Arrangements are by Dudley Hoffman Mortuary.
