Lowell Miller heard the explosion and could see billowing smoke from his Santa Barbara home. He quickly rushed over, not even bothering to put on his shoes.

As he arrived on the scene, he found a recreational vehicle fully on fire.

“There was this huge black ball and fire,” Miller said. “It really went up. It was exciting.”

The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Friday when residents near the intersection of Torino Drive and Cambria Way heard an explosion that shook their homes.

The RV was parked in the residential area near the intersection.

Firefighters from the city and county both responded to the explosion and helped put out the vehicle blaze.

No one was injured in the fire, according to Captain Josh Brousseau from the Santa Barbara City Fire Department. He stated that the SBFD is currently investigating the fire and is not sure what caused the vehicle to explode.

The owner of the vehicle has not been identified.

Ron Stankowski, another resident from the neighborhood, said he smelled gasoline when he was passing through the area earlier in the day.

“I didn’t see it go off. I just smelled the gas as I… rode by on my bicycle past it. It was noticeable and then (when I) came back later and saw the smoke and it was on fire,” Stankowski said.

He said that when he saw the smoke he rushed back to the area because he was afraid it may be his house on fire.

Brousseau said that the vehicle would be towed away after investigators were finished. Firefighters confirmed there was no risk of further ignitions.
