San Marcos girls lacrosse pulled away down the stretch for a 10-7 victory against a strong Newbury Park squad on Monday at Warkentin Stadium in Santa Barbara.
It was a tight matchup throughout, as the teams were tied 3-3 at the end of the first quarter and 4-4 at halftime. After the Royals scored the first two goals of the third, Newbury Park came back to cut the deficit to 7-6 heading into the fourth.
The San Marcos defense then took over in the final quarter, holding the Panthers to just one goal while the Royals’ offense got scores from Mia Richmond, Victoria Aldana and Josephine Grossman to finish off the 10-7 win.
“This was one of our better defensive nights and all of our defensive stops kept goosing our offense into success,” San Marcos head coach Paul Ramsey said. “I really have to give credit in games like this to everyone but our strength coaches work with the team all fall and winter is really starting to show up now.”
Carly Grant anchored a standout defensive performance for the Royals, as she ended with five saves against a potent Newbury Park offense.
“We held their two leading scores to just one goal apiece and constantly frustrated them all night long. It was awesome,” Ramsey said.
San Marcos (8-3) will head across town and clash with rival Santa Barbara High on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Peabody Stadium.
Boys Lacrosse
The San Marcos boys lacrosse team fell on the road to Calabasas High by a score of 15-4 on Monday.
The Royals scored first courtesy of a goal by Dillon Masri, but Calabasas answered with a strong run of its own to take a lead into halftime.
San Marcos kept it competitive early in the second half thanks to scores from Josue Quezada, Julian Weinstein and Dashel Diraison, but the Coyotes took control late en route to the win.
The Royals will host Santa Barbara High on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Warkentin Stadium.
