A Santa Barbara man accused of injuring people in a car crash near the corner of North Milpas and Anapamu streets in October entered not guilty pleas in court Tuesday to two counts of reckless driving.
Sebastian Escamilla-Lopez, 18, was arrested on Oct. 19 after allegedly crashing his white Audi sedan into a tree near the Santa Barbara Bowl, injuring himself and three passengers, according to police.
The District Attorney’s Office charged Escamilla-Lopez with one felony count of reckless driving with great bodily injury, along with special allegations that the crime is a serious/violent offense and that a victim in the incident was particularly vulnerable. One of the passengers involved in the crash was a minor at the time of the incident, according to authorities.
He also faces a misdemeanor charge of reckless driving with bodily injury for two other passengers.
The car crash reportedly occurred when the sedan was traveling eastbound along Anapamu Street, failed to make the 90-degree turn onto Milpas Street, and crashed into a tree.
At the scene, police said four people were injured, including the driver, and transported to the hospital with minor-to-moderate injuries.
Escamilla-Lopez was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, but the District Attorney’s Office did not file DUI-related charges in the Nov. 10 complaint, according to court records.
The preliminary hearing for the case was scheduled for Jan. 20 in Santa Barbara Superior Court.
