The Santa Maria-Bonita School District (SMBSD) recognized 29 outstanding employees district-wide at its 2026 Excellence in Education Gala, March 27 at the Santa Maria Fairpark.

The honored employees, who were nominated by their colleagues, ranged from teachers to administrators to custodians to school counselors.

Of the 29 honorees, four were lauded as distinguished honorees in the categories of classified, certificated, administrative, and guest employee.

A panel of school employees and community members conducted interviews with all of the honorees and reviewed submissions before selecting the following distinguished honorees:

Classified: Lucy Castaneda, office manager, El Camino Junior High School
Certificated: Pamela Morse, school counselor, Oakley Elementary School
Administrative: Katie Ibarra, program specialist, special education
Guest employee: Ann McDaniel

“It is an absolute joy to come together and celebrate the incredible talent within our district,” said SMBSD Superintendent Darren McDuffie. “I am deeply proud to serve alongside a team of this caliber, including our dedicated guest employees who step in with such passion and expertise.

“Every one of these individuals honored at the gala is committed to ensuring our students have the most enriching experience possible. Recognizing their hard work is a true honor.”
