A 30-year-old Santa Maria man has been charged in Santa Barbara County Superior Court with a felony count of hit and run resulting in death after the vehicle he was driving struck and killed a Nipomo woman over the weekend.

Santa Maria police officers arrested Juan Ortiz Mendoza early Sunday following the late Saturday crash at the intersection of Blosser Road and Bunny Avenue.

Just before midnight Saturday, emergency personnel from the Santa Maria Fire Department also responded and rendered aid to Maria Juarez Moreno, 46.

Juarez Moreno was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Santa Maria police officers.

The criminal complaint also include two misdemeanor counts for driving under the influence of alcohol and driving while having a blood alcohol level of 0.08% or higher.

The complaint also includes an infraction for being an unlicensed driver.

The driver fled the scene immediately following the collision, police said.
