A 30-year-old Santa Maria man has died and a 20-year-old man from Orcutt has been arrested following a suspected DUI crash early Sunday in southern San Luis Obispo County.

Shortly after 2 a.m., emergency personnel from CalFire and the California Highway Patrol responded to the crash on southbound Highway 101, north of Highway 166.

After a solo vehicle rollover crash blocked the southbound lanes, a Honda driven by Dylan River Lossing, 20, of Orcutt approached the rear of a 2012 Nissan Altima that was being driven by a 30-year-old from Santa Maria.

The Nissan’s driver had stopped behind a vehicle driven by Leticia Fernandez, 53, of Bakersfield, who was stopped in her black GMC Sierra.

“Due to his unsafe speed, Party 1 (Mr. Lossing) was unable to slow down or avoid the stopped traffic which was stopped for the solo vehicle crash,” Sgt. Charles Wilson said. “And the front of his Honda collided into the rear of the Nissan.”

The impact of the collision caused the Nissan to be pushed forward into the GMC.

Lossing ’s vehicle continued in a southerly direction on the dirt/grass median and collided with a Chrysler Pacifica, being driven by Trisha Norris, 61, of Santa Maria.

Norris had stopped ahead of the GMC as a result of the original solo vehicle rollover collision.

Lossing was driving his vehicle at a high rate of speed prior to the collision, Wilson said.

The Nissan Altima’s driver was transported by ambulance to Marian Regional Medical Center where he died due to his injuries Sunday morning, Wilson added.

Authorities will release his name after family members have been notified.

CHP officers believed alcohol played a part in the collision, Wilson said.

Lossing was arrested and transported to the San Luis Obispo County Jail. He remained in the custody Sunday night in lieu of $100,000 bail.
