For a fourth time this week, Santa Maria sent a new heat record Friday, breaking the date’s 95-year-old high temperature, according to the National Weather Service.

Friday’s high temperature at the Santa Maria Airport reached 90 degrees. The previous record for the date was 87 degrees in 1931.

The quartet of records began Tuesday with 95 degrees, besting the 85-degree high reached in 1978. Santa Barbara also broke its daily heat record that day.

On Wednesday, Santa Maria reached 93 degrees which was above the prior record of 83 degrees from 1960, followed by a high of 88 on Thursday, above the 83 degrees reached in 1984 and 1925.

The Central Coast and Southern California have been under “an unusually early spring heat wave,” according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures will remain well above normal through next week, although some cooler weather and coastal fog will be possible through the weekend, according to the forecast.

Still, the weather will be 10 to 15 degrees above normal for the weekend.

“Temperatures will trend upward again next week but are not expected to be as hot as this week,” according to the NWS forecast.

Another round of heat advisories may be needed starting Monday.

Meanwhile, rain isn’t expected through March 30 with the possibility of light rain around the beginning of April.
