Carpinteria High awarded its Phil Womble Ethics in Sports Award and spring sports made their debut at the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe on Monday.
Warrior aquatics standout Hazel Dugre was presented with the award before the remaining winter sports teams and spring squads provided updates on postseason and preseason action, respectively.
Hazel Dugre Wins Carpinteria High Phil Womble Award
Dugre has been a key part of the Carpinteria High aquatics programs for the past three years, serving as a team captain on the water polo team and competing at a high level for the swim program.
As it states on the SBART website, “This award acknowledges student-athletes who value and incorporate into their daily lives, the following qualities: accountability, respect of teammates, opponents, and officials, honesty, positive attitude, reliability, loyalty, sportsmanship, others above self, and team above personal interest.”
Jon Otsuki, who is the Carpinteria High swim head coach and was the girls water polo head coach for the previous two seasons, believes Dugre perfectly exemplifies the values that the award stands for.
“Whether in the pool or out of the pool, Hazel exemplifies dedication, leadership and unwavering character,” Otsuki said. “Throughout every practice and competition, Hazel has demonstrated accountability, reliability and respect for teammates, coaches, opponents and officials alike.”
Current Carpinteria High girls water polo head coach Russell Russo has seen Dugre step into a leadership role during her junior season, when she was voted a team captain.
“Hazel has displayed all of the characteristics of a leader and is always still striving to become a role model for others,” Russo said. “She is always ready to listen and adjust her priorities for the betterment of the team.
“She frequently finds ways to have positive and constructive feedback for her teammates at practice and games. She is honest and upfront to her coaches as well as her teammates when the opportunity calls for it.”
In addition to excelling in the pool as the Citrus Coast League Water Polo MVP last season, Dugre gets the job done in the classroom with an impressive weighted GPA of 4.8.
“I just want to say thank you to my parents and my coaches and all my teammates for showing me so much support and encouragement every day,” Dugre said. “I really just try to take the encouragement that they gave me and share it with my teammates, because I think it’s really important to have a culture on a team that supports each other and just fills everybody with positivity because that’s what makes us successful.”
Dugre is the fifth of eight Phil Womble Ethics in Sports Award winners for this school year, joining Santa Barbara High’s Elina Stump, Dos Pueblos’ Logan Pearce, Cate’s Maddie Kollock and Providence’s Gavin Rutland.. The award is sponsored by Dave Pintard of the Pintard Group.
“What competition should really be about is finding something that we really care about and coming together and accomplishing what our goals are together,” Dugre said. “I’m just really grateful for this award and super lucky to be surrounded by so many amazing people.”
Bishop Diego Girls Basketball Set for CIF Title Game

The Cardinals’ girls basketball squad has enjoyed a stellar 2025-26 campaign, and it has a chance to achieve the ultimate goal this weekend.
Bishop Diego will head down to Azusa Pacific University and square off against Burroughs of Burbank for the CIF-SS Division 5 championship on Saturday at 2 p.m.
“These girls just continue to amaze me and impress me every single game,” Bishop Diego head coach Jeff Burich said. “We’re excited to be where we are, and this is a fun group of girls to coach.”
The Cardinals, who are 26-4 this season, developed into a well-oiled machine as the season rolled on. Dos Pueblos transfer and junior Eden Wynne has stepped into the team’s lead scoring role, while senior Jaymi Coronado serves as the main playmaker and ball handler.
Meanwhile, the sophomore trio of Jeisa Coronado, Alyssa Chrestenson and Luz Castro has provided strong depth and stability that has helped Bishop Diego on this postseason run.
Springs Sports Season Underway
As February creeps to a close and the storm passes, the local high school spring sports teams have either opened up their campaigns already or are primed to in the coming weeks.
From the baseball diamond to the beach volleyball courts, local squads with plenty of talented student-athletes have already given fans lots to look forward to for the next few months.
The majority of local teams will be competing in non-league action this week, but some of the first crosstown rivalry games of the spring season will take place on Thursday.
Dos Pueblos and Cate boys lacrosse will clash at Scott O’Leary Stadium in Goleta at 6 p.m., while the girls lacrosse matchup between the same teams will be at Meldman Field in Carpinteria at 4:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, Santa Barbara High girls beach volleyball will play host to Dos Pueblos at East Beach on Thursday at 3 p.m.
