Local track & field, swim, lacrosse and beach volleyball squads made their appearances at the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.

While those squads provided their updates as they rolled through league action, the upcoming week features some key crosstown rivalry matchups in sports across the board.

Monday’s luncheon also marked SBART’s celebration of Athletic Trainers Month, presented by Carp Physio. Athletic trainers from the local high schools and colleges were honored at the top of the luncheon and coaches gave them the credit they deserve throughout the luncheon.

The weekly SBART luncheon is presented by Maho Prentice LLP, Investec and Fidelity National Title Group Santa Barbara.

A full video of the luncheon will be added here when made available by SBART.

Busy Rivalry Week Ahead

The local high school sports schedule is packed to the brim with crosstown rivalry showdowns this week, from the baseball diamond to the golf course.

San Marcos and Dos Pueblos are set to square off in several sports, taking each other on in baseball, softball and golf this week. The baseball and softball teams will have two-game series on Tuesday and Friday, while the two boys golf teams will meet on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Glenn Annie Golf Course.

In baseball, Dos Pueblos sits atop the Channel League at 5-1, while San Marcos is tied for second at 4-2. The Charger softball team also leads the league at 6-0, and the Royals are in fourth place at 4-2.

“It’s going to be close softball and it’s going to be fun softball, so I encourage you all to come out and watch and support your athletes,” San Marcos head coach Emily Dietz said.

Meanwhile, San Marcos and Santa Barbara High will clash in rivalry lacrosse action on Thursday. The boys matchup will be at Warkentin Stadium at 6 p.m., while the girls will be at Peabody Stadium at the same time.

The Dons’ boys lacrosse team is 5-1 overall and has won its lone game of the Channel League season with an 8-5 win over defending champion Dos Pueblos last week.

“The boys lacrosse team at Santa Barbara High School and something new is happening this year: Before the game starts, we actually expect to win every game. It’s really an awesome feeling,” Santa Barbara High head coach John Keogh said.

On the girls side, San Marcos is 2-0 early in the league schedule, and the Dons sit at 0-1.

Those won’t be the only lacrosse rivalry games of the week, as Dos Pueblos and Cate will meet on Tuesday. The boys game will be in Carpinteria at 4:30 p.m., while the Chargers will host the girls game at Scott O’Leary Stadium at 4:30 p.m.

Dos Pueblos and Santa Barbara High are set to face off in two different sports this week, as the boys golf teams will compete on Tuesday at Santa Barbara Golf Club and the boys volleyball squads will have their rivalry showdown on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. inside J.R. Richards Gym.

The Dons are second in the Channel League boys volleyball standings at 4-1, one game ahead of the 3-2 Dos Pueblos Chargers.

San Marcos and Bishop Diego will round out the crosstown matchups with a rare boys volleyball matchup between the two schools. The Cardinals will welcome the Royals to the Brick House on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

“Our match on Wednesday is an opportunity we’re fortunate to have at home against a strong team like San Marcos,” Bishop Diego head coach Dillan Bennett said. “They’ve established themselves as the best team in town so far this season, and our guys are excited to get to compete against such a strong team.

“They will give us all we can handle. Hopefully, we will see a lot of red in the Brick House on Wednesday to support local high school volleyball.”
