The Santa Barbara City College Women’s Basketball team split two games this weekend down south, losing at Fullerton on Thursday before beating MiraCosta on Friday.
The win propels the Vaqueros to 6-10 overall, finishing non-conference play.
Against Fullerton, both teams were deadlocked at halftime, 30-30. Fullerton gave themselves some breathing room in the third quarter, winning it 18-10, thus taking a 48-40 lead into the fourth.
Both teams continued the competitiveness in the fourth, scoring 16 apiece; however, that meant a 64-56 Fullerton win.
Neither team shot over 36% from the field, but the difference came in fast break points – Fullerton’s 20 to SBCC’s six – and subsequently, points in the paint – Fullerton’s 34 to SBCC’s 18.
Kiani Rojas led the team in points with 17, also swiping five steals. Kaylee Bosetti had 12 points, including three threes.
Paityn Persson led in points off the bench with 11 and led the team in rebounds with nine. She also had three blocks, leading the team. Leila Chisholm led in steals (6) and assists (4).
Thankfully, the Vaqueros had an opportunity the very next day, traveling an hour further south for a matchup at MiraCosta.
A strong first half gave the Vaqueros a nice 50-35 cushion at the break. Shooting was key for SBCC, who ended up with a 47% field goal percentage on the day.
They would play solid enough in the second half to hold that lead on the way to a 76-62 victory.
Kaylee Bosetti continued her hot shooting with 20 points, including four threes, also providing four steals. Lily Mires was all over the floor with 13 points, five rebounds, four assists, and three blocks.
Leila Chisholm led in assists with seven and was great defensively with six steals.
Paityn Persson starred with her first career triple-double, with a stat line of 25 points, 11 rebounds and 10 steals, all coming off the bench.
She also had five assists and five blocks and shot 11-for-19 from the field (58%), capping off arguably the best individual performance by a Vaquero all season.
The Vaqueros hope to continue the momentum into conference play, which begins on Wednesday at home against Cuesta at 7:00 PM.
