Solvang has canceled Friday’s annual Christmas tree burn because of recent storms, which flooded the field where the big bonfire takes place.

Organizers said the 34th annual event was canceled because the soggy field conditions are a safety concern.

The tree burn takes place at a field at Mission Santa Inés, and is supervised by the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

“This event requires extensive logistics and coordination among multiple agencies,” Solvang Parks and Recreation staff said in a statement Wednesday. “To allow adequate time for planning, staffing, and safety preparations, a decision needed to be made sooner rather than later while continuing to monitor field conditions.

“Unfortunately, conditions have not improved to a level that would allow the event to proceed safely.”

Residents can still drop off their decoration-free trees at the burn site through Friday, and they will be hauled away for chipping. The mission is at 1760 Mission Drive.

The event usually serves as a closing ceremony for the city’s Julefest celebrations. Along with a popular holiday parade, Julefest hosts lights and music shows, guided tours and a self-guided scavenger hunt for Nisse (Christmas elves) hidden around town.

The city also hosted a Copenhagen Countdown to mark New Year’s Eve.
