A student at Alta Vista Alternative High School was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries after they were allegedly assaulted with a knife by another student Tuesday afternoon, police said.
The altercation occurred on Tuesday just after noon and involved multiple students, according to the Santa Barbara Police Department.
The high school is located on La Colina Junior High School’s campus, at 4025 Foothill Road.
The injured student was transported to the hospital by American Medical Response ambulance. Police said they had non-life-threatening injuries.
Two of the juvenile suspects involved in the fight were seen leaving campus, and police set up a perimeter to look for them, Sgt. Bryan Kerr said.
Police officers located them in the 700 block of Cieneguitas Road.
One of them was arrested and booked into the Santa Barbara County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a knife on a school campus, and a crime committed in furtherance of a criminal street gang, Kerr said.
Ed Zuchelli, a spokesperson for the Santa Barbara Unified School District, said that the fight started at the Quetzal program on La Colina’s school campus.
School faculty members quickly intervened and stopped the fight, he said.
As police responded to the scene, the campus initiated its “shelter in place” protocols for 40 minutes until the school was secured.
“At no time was there a threat to the campus, and thankfully staff intervened immediately,” Zuchelli said.
