A suspect was arrested Wednesday afternoon in the attempted robbery of a jewelry store in downtown Santa Barbara, according to the Santa Barbara Police Department.

Officers were dispatched at about 4:20 p.m. to a reported robbery in progress at Gillio Rare Coins & Fine Jewelry at 1103 State St., police Sgt. Ethan Ragsdale said.

“Multiple officers responded and as officers entered the store, they observed an altercation occurring between a store employee and suspect,” Ragsdale said. “The officers took the suspect into custody.”

The investigation revealed that the suspect entered the store with a firearm and demanded jewelry, Ragsdale said.

“One of the store employees attempted to disarm the suspect, and a fight ensued between them,” he added.
