A vehicle deemed suspicious had led to the closure Highway 1 around Vandenberg Space Force Base‘s main gate and a brief “secure hold” at a nearby school Friday morning.
At approximately 10:10 a.m., 30th Security Forces Squadron personnel responded to a suspicious vehicle near the Santa Maria Gate.
One individual was detained for questioning, Vandenberg officials said.
“As a precautionary measure to ensure public safety, a military working dog team and 30th Civil Engineer Squadron Explosive Ordnance Disposal personnel were dispatched to assess the vehicle,” base officials said.
No threats or explosives have currently been identified.
The investigation is ongoing, Vandenberg representatives added.
“The installation remains safe and continues normal operations.”
Vandenberg Middle School, located outside the main gate but on base property, was placed on “secure hold” status for a short time Friday morning, Lompoc Unified School District officials said.
Highway 1 in the area was briefly closed between the California Boulevard and Timber Lane. Traffic between Lompoc and Santa Maria has been detoured to avoid the closed area, the California Highway Patrol said.
All lanes of Highway 1 in both directions were reopened to vehicles around 1 p.m.
Parents also were alerted to expect additional traffic around the school due to the closure of the busy road near the main gate.
Due to the ongoing war between Iran and the United States-Israel, military installations across the country have beefed up security measures.
