When most parents picture school, they see desks in neat rows and a teacher at the front of the room. At Acton Academy Santa Barbara, those rows are gone. In their place is a circle of young heroes wrestling with big questions, taking ownership of their learning, and seeing the world as their classroom.

This September 2nd, a small group of Santa Barbara’s youngest learners will step into that circle for the very first time. They’ll be part of a K–5 microschool that blends Montessori-inspired independence, Socratic discussions, and real-world projects to prepare children not just for tests, but for life.

For Acton Academy Santa Barbara founder Max Peck, a Marine Corps veteran and USC-trained business strategist, this isn’t just a new school—it’s a personal mission.

“When my son was born, I started thinking about what kind of world he would inherit—and how to prepare him for it,” Peck said.

“The more I looked, the more I realized that the traditional model of education, where kids spend most of the day passively listening, just isn’t enough for the world they’re growing up in.”

Life in the Studio: Where Learners Lead

Each morning at Acton begins in a Socratic circle, where young learners explore real challenges and moral dilemmas—sharpening critical thinking, listening, and communication skills.

From there, the day flows into “core skills” work in reading, writing, and math. In the Spark Studio (ages 5–7), this learning is completely screen-free.

Instead of computers, children work with Montessori materials, creative workbooks, hands-on games, and tactile challenges designed to spark deep engagement. Guides don’t lecture—they ask questions. Learners set their own goals, track their progress, and hold each other accountable.

“The learning here is learner-led,” Peck explained. “The studio is alive with movement, conversation, and problem-solving. It’s not about marching through a rigid schedule—it’s about giving children the freedom and structure to direct their own learning journey.”

Structure Without Ceilings

For parents frustrated by worksheets and busywork, Acton offers what Peck calls “freedom within a framework.” Every learner signs a contract—drafted by the learners themselves—that sets goals, responsibilities, and community standards. Breaking that contract carries peer-designed consequences, teaching accountability in a way that’s real and immediate.

Acton’s approach blends independence with intentional guardrails. “It’s not a free-for-all,” said Peck. “It’s an environment where learners take ownership, work hard, and lift each other up.”

Character, Confidence, and Calling

The heart of Acton’s mission is character formation. Every project, discussion, and challenge is designed to help children see life as a Hero’s Journey—one where their unique talents can make a difference.

“It’s not just about getting ready for middle school or high school,” Peck said. “It’s about preparing young people to face a world that’s changing faster than ever, and to meet it with curiosity, courage, and kindness.”

Enrollment Details

Enrollment for the inaugural year is capped at just 10 learners to keep the environment intimate and high-engagement.

The application process includes a studio tour, family interview, and short “challenge” activity so prospective learners can decide if Acton feels right for them.
