Grace Stone and Kaylin Cooney posted double-figure kills, pacing the San Marcos girls volleyball team to its first Channel League win, a 25-13, 25-15, 25-18 sweep over Rio Mesa at an oven-like Thunderhut on Tuesday.
Stone had the hot arm swing for the Royals, racking up 11 kills with no errors. Cooney added 10 kills and served four aces.
Alina Stapf led the defensive effort with nine digs to go with three aces. Nica Green provided strong passing.
The Royals (1-1 in league) play at 2-0 Santa Barbara on Thursday.
Ventura 3, Dos Pueblos 0
The Chargers had passing struggles in a 25-12, 25-15, 25-22 loss against Ventura in a Channel League match
“We had a tough night versus a really solid Ventura team,” said coach Megan O’Carroll. “They served tough against us and we struggled to find our groove. We finally settled into it in the third set and had them 18-12 but couldn’t close it out.”
Sonia Mancuso put down five kills and had 11 digs and Jayden Jones had four kills and five digs. Libero Atasha Black picked up 10 digs for DP.
The Chargers are 1-1 in league and 4-7 overall.
Nordhoff 3, Carpinteria 2
The Citrus Coast League opener was literally a heated battle as the Warriors and Rangers went the distance in a hot Nordhoff gym in Ojai on Tuesday.
Nordhoff prevailed 25-13, 19-25, 25-9, 17-25, 17-15.
“Both teams left everything on the court in almost 100-degree temperatures,” said Carpinteria coach Marc Denitz.
The Warriors were led by Liz Alpizar with 14 kills, Jenny Valencia with 21 assists and eight digs, and Camila Martinez with four blocks.
Carpinteria falls to 3-4 on the season.
