A Santa Maria man was killed and a Lompoc woman was critically injured Monday evening in a head-on crash on Highway 135 in Orcutt.

The collision involving a Honda Civic and a Toyota RAV4 occurred at about 6:45 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Highway 135, about half a mile south of Clark Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Santa Barbara County firefighters responded to the scene, along with a Calstar medical helicopter, an AMR ambulance, sheriff’s deputies, and the CHP.

The adult male driver and sole occupant of the Civic was declared dead at the scene, according to fire Capt. Scott Safechuck.

The Civic’s driver was 22 years old and from Santa Maria, CHP Officer Maria Barriga said.

He was traveling the wrong way on Highway 135 when the vehicles collided head on, Barriga added.

His name was not released pending notification of relatives.

The adult female driver of the RAV4, who had to be extricated from the wreckage, suffered major injuries, and was flown to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, Safechuck said.

The 27-year-old Lompoc woman’s name and details on her condition were not available.

Both southbound lanes were blocked by the wreckage, according to the CHP, and the highway was being shut down at Clark Avenue.
