Two people were killed Thursday in a two-vehicle vehicle collision in Santa Maria.

Santa Maria police, firefighters and other emergency personnel were dispatched at about 9:15 a.m. to the crash at Bradley and Stowell roads.

Both vehicles sustained major front-end damage.

A 20-year-old Santa Maria woman was eastbound on Stowell when she apparently ran a red light, said Sgt. Michael McGehee.

She collided with the passenger side of a vehicle driven southbound on Bradley by a 68-year-old Santa Maria man, McGehee said.

With him in the vehicle was his wife, a 55-year-old Santa Maria woman.

Both were transported by AMR ambulance to Marian Regional Medical Center, where they later succumbed to their injuries, McGehee said.

Their names were not available pending notification of relatives.

Initial reports at the scene indicated only one person was killed.

The female driver, whose name was not released, remained on scene and was cooperative with investigating officers, McGehee said.

He added that it was unknown whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision.

Traffic in the area was shut down for a time as emergency personnel tended to the injured and removed the wreckage.

The crash remained under investigation. Anyone with information about it is asked to call Officer Dustin Rhoads at 805.928.3781, ext. 1355.
