A 28-year-old man was killed Wednesday evening when his vehicle slammed into a parked big-rig harvesting trailer near Santa Maria, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.
Firefighters and other emergency personnel were dispatched at about 6 p.m. to the collision on Highway 1 north of Black Road, fire Capt. Scott Safechuck said.
The Ford sedan was traveling north on Highway 1 and collided with the trailer, which was parked on the east side of the roadway, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The sedan then continued north, and ended up underneath another parked trailer, the CHP said.
Heavy extrication was required to remove the man’s body from the wreckage, Safechuck said.
The driver, a Santa Maria resident whose name was not released pending notification of relatives, was the only person in the vehicle, and was declared dead at the scene, the CHP said.
A heavy wrecker was brought in to lift the trailer off of the sedan.
Assisting with the incident were personnel from the Santa Maria Fire Department.
The crash was under investigation by the California Highway Patrol, which was still trying to determine the cause, and if the driver was under the influence.
